On this Martin Luther King Jr. day, we turn to comics, in particular black comics.

The 6th Annual Black Comic Book Festival took place over the weekend at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City.  Thousands attended the two day festival, which was filled with panels, and drew illustrators and cosplay characters. Some were interested in the upcoming "Black Panther" movie, while others were seeking to find deeper stories through the popular medium of comics.

Sheena Howard is an associate professor of communication at Rider University and author of the "Encyclopedia of Black Comics."  She is also the first black female to receive the Eisner Award for the book "Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation."

She says that comics and comic books have long been a vessel to address social issues. Here, Howard explains how black comics have evolved since the civil rights era.

This segment is hosted by Todd Zwillich
